Short Description
The Cook County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved an FY2026 budget adding seven positions to the Public Defender’s immigration division, expanding capacity to handle cases from the Family Support Network and Midwest Immigration Defenders Alliance hotlines (the region’s primary intake for legal-service requests) and to represent detained individuals. The expansion was enabled by Illinois HB2790 (2021) and HB2436 (2025).
