Mayor Barbara Lee signed an executive order establishing the Protect the Town Taskforce to coordinate citywide interdepartmental planning and response to potential National Guard or U.S. Department of Homeland Security deployments to the city. It also directs the city to convene regular meetings with community leaders, immigrant rights organizations, and city departments to share information, determine community impacts, and build stronger ties. The order additionally reiterates that Oakland Police Department will remain under local control and will not enforce or assist Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials conducting civil immigration enforcement, to the fullest extent of the law.
