Short Description

New York Governor Kathy Hocul signed a series of immigrant protections as part of the state’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget. The protections included (1) prohibiting state and local law enforcement from entering into 287(g) agreements, (2) prohibiting local governments from helping to fund immigration detention centers, (3) prohibiting federal, state, and local law enforcement from wearing face coverings, with limited exceptions, (4) creating a legal pathway for individuals to sue federal officers over alleged rights violations, (5) codifying the right to public education regardless of immigration status and restricting the collection and disclosing of immigration statuses of students, and (6) restricting federal immigration authorities from non-public areas of state and local facilities without a judicial warrant.
