Short Description
The Washington legislature enacted the Driver Privacy Act, SB 6002, which is the state’s first comprehensive law regulating automatic license plate readers (ALPRs). The law limits their use to specific investigations (felonies, gross misdemeanors, stolen vehicles, missing persons), explicitly prohibits use for immigration enforcement, tracking of protected health care access, or constitutionally protected activity, caps data retention at 21 days, and requires a warrant before obtaining ALPR data from private vendors. Advocates including the ACLU of Washington said the enacted 21-day retention period was a compromise, only marginally shorter than the prior 30-day status quo.
