Short Description
Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett announced his office would end participation in the federal State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP), a voluntary program that reimbursed the county for jailing certain noncitizens in exchange for sharing data on those individuals that was forwarded to ICE. Dane County had been the largest local SCAAP recipient in Wisconsin, collecting roughly $80,000 to $90,000 per year. The sheriff cited community concerns and the change in federal administration, and said staff time previously spent compiling SCAAP data would be redirected to jail re-entry and rehabilitation programming.
