Short Description

Through the Protect Safety of Individuals Who Are Immigrants Act, HB26-1276, the Colorado legislature authorized state public health inspectors to conduct unannounced inspections (at least four times a year) of facilities detaining individuals for civil immigration proceedings, required POST Board training for peace officers on immigration-detainer law, directed the Attorney General to issue a policy on protecting personal identifying information, and extended civil liability to employers whose staff disclose someone’s immigration status to federal authorities.

In June 2026, GEO Group filed a lawsuit against the state of Colorado to stop enforcement of the component of HB26-1276 that requires public health inspections of immigrant detention facilities. GEO Group is a private corporation that operates immigrant detention facilities across the country, including in Colorado.
